LSU "Broadband"Universal Sensor -as its name suggests thebroadband oxygen sensor hasthe ability to not onlyindicate an air/fuel ratio oflambda = 1 but can measure aslow as lambda = 0.7 up toinfinity (infinity =atmosphere containing oxygenof ~ 21% by volume). This isa unique quality compared tothe two step rich/leanfunction of a standardthimble or planar sensor.

This LSU type sensor hasnot only been successfullyapplied to standard petrolengined passenger cars, butfor lean-burn and gaseousfuelled engines. Due to theirunique design these sensorsare also used in dieselpowered vehicles equippedwith electronic dieselcontrol (EDC) systems andindustrial applicationsincluding gas poweredfurnaces, air/fuel ratiomeasuring equipment andengine/chassis dynamometers.

Broadband oxygensensors can only be used inconjunction with a controlunit that is speciallydesignedto support theoperational function andprecise heater elementmanagement required by an LSUbroadband sensor. It isimportant to note that aspecifically designed wiringharness connector containing6 pins is used for LSU typesensors. Whilst the physicalappearance of the oxygensensor connector will varyaccording to customer andvehicle design requirements,all LSU sensors have acalibration resistor builtinto the connector housing.Each individual LSU sensor iscalibrated at the conclusionof the manufacturing processby laser altering thisresistor value. Thereforeremoval or exchange of theoxygen sensor connector willrender the sensor inoperable.
